WHAT DOES COSMETIC BONDING INVOLVE?
Dental bonding involves the application of a durable tooth-colored composite resin material directly to the surface of the tooth, which is then sculpted and artistically shaped, to blend naturally and seamlessly with your existing teeth. A high intensity light is then used to cure the composite material in a matter of seconds, hardening and reinforcing it to the surface of the tooth. Often, it is necessary to slightly reduce the surface of the tooth before adding the composite resin material to avoid an over contoured appearance.
Although composite resins are cosmetically pleasing and easily placed, their durability is not as strong as porcelain restorations. These resins typically last from 4-7 years before they begin to chip, stain or wear. When this happens, the bonded restorations will need to be replaced.
Because of some of the limitations of dental bonding, most dentists view it as best suited for small cosmetic changes, for temporary correction of cosmetic defects, and for correction of teeth in areas of very low bite pressure. A stronger, longer lasting alternative to bonding is either porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.
