Professional Dental Cleaning

Women in Chair receiving professional dental cleaningProfessional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed by one of our highly trained Registered Dental Hygienist.

A regular professional cleaning is an essential foundation for the prevention of tooth decay and gum disease and is part of an effective preventive program.

Your regular cleaning appointment will include the following:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar):
Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque:
Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gum tissue. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
  • Teeth polishing:
Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
  • Periodontal Pocket Charting:
Annually, a periodontal evaluation is completed at your hygiene visit to insure that your gum tissue is healthy or that your periodontal disease is not progressing.
  • Evaluation of your oral hygiene home care:
In addition, we will evaluate and suggest improvements to your current dental hygiene home care routine. The most important part of Preventive Dental Care happens at home. Brushing and flossing properly, along with regular dental checkups, can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. We want your personal preventive efforts to be effective and help you to maintain a healthy, comfortable and attractive smile.
  • Update necessary X-rays (as needed only) and oral exam:
Periodically, updated x-rays are taken to diagnose any possible problems that may have developed since your last visit. Our goal is to prevent problems before they develop whenever possible. If a problem has developed, early detection and treatment is best to avoid discomfort and more costly treatment.
  • Oral cancer screening
Every hour of every day, one American dies of oral cancer. Early detection and diagnosis can make a tremendous difference in life expectancy; oral cancer is 90% curable when found in its early stages. Unfortunately, 70% of oral cancers are diagnosed in the late stages. You will be screened for oral cancer at your regular cleaning appointment.
  • Blood Pressure Screening
High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You could have this dangerous condition and not know it. If your blood pressure is too high, it is a serious risk factor for serious medical problems such as heart attack, stroke or kidney disease. You will be screened for high blood pressure at your regular cleaning appointment.
  • Evaluation of your existing dental restorations
Your existing dental restorations and dental appliances will be evaluated at each doctor exam.

The Mouth - Body Connection

There is increasing evidence that poor dental health is associated with several serious and chronic medical conditions. A regular Dental Health Preventive Program will help protect you from the following:

  • Heart Disease
Bacteria from chronically inflammed and infected gum tissue can lenter the blood stream through the mouth and lead to an increase in plaque formation in heart arteries, which causes cholestrol to be deposited in the walls of the heart vessels.
  • Stroke
Periodontal disease contributes to thickening of blood vessels. Bacteria in the blood stream can be a factor for clotting of the blood. These micro-clots can lead to reduced blood flow in the blood vessels in the brain, leading to strokes. People with advancing periodontal disease have a 4.3 times greater risk of stroke.
  • Diabetes
Diabetics are more susceptible to infection and delay in healing. Periodontal disease can cause infections when not treated or it is not under control. In addition, a severe periodontal condition lengthens the time period when persons with diabetes experiences a high blood sugar level.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Bacteria from a gum disease condition can be carried by the bloodstream into the airways of the throat and lungs. New research confirms findings that periodontal disease may increase a person's risk for the respiratory disorder Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the sixth leading cause of mortality in the United States.
  • Cancer Risk Factor
Periodontal disease is associated with a small but significant increase in cancer risk. Research has shown a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer.
  • Pre-term, Low Birth-Weight Babies
Mothers with gum disease have six times greater risk of delivering preterm, low-birth-weight babies
