In the same way that women have their own medical care needs, women also have special dental care needs. In addition, womens' oral health needs differ from men's dental care needs. Therefore, Dr. Malone has made both his treatment approach and the relaxing environment of his office welcoming to women and their families.
Hormonal fluctuations in women of various ages uniquely affect their dental health particularly during puberty, menses, pregnancy, and menopause. Also, more recent research has directly linked gum disease, also known as periodontitis, to a variety of womens' health problems such as: heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems and less optimal births. Since gum disease is typically painless, many women are unaware of having it. The smart course for women who value good health is consistent oral hygiene as well as professional preventative dental care.
Birth Control Pills simulate pregnancy because they contain progesterone or estrogen, which can lead to gingivitis, or gum inflammation, with long term use. Use of certain antibiotics that are used to help control periodontal disease, while taking birth control, can decrease birth control effectiveness.
During puberty, rising hormone levels increase blood circulation to the gums. This may cause sensitivity, irritation and swelling. Some women experience menstrual gingivitis, which can include red, swollen and bleeding gums. Still others experience cold or canker sores, herpes infections and swollen salivary glands. Menstrual gingivitis typically occurs right before a woman's period and abates once menses has started. Our office is experienced in working with young women on these special needs and works with them to put into place the habits that will help them experience a lifetime of oral health.
Pregnancy places unique demands on a woman's body. Due to increased progesterone hormone levels, tooth and gum problems during pregnancy are so common that many women simply tolerate them as part of the process. However, proper dental care and extra vigilance in oral hygiene before, during and after pregnancy can actually eliminate many common health problems for you and your baby. Recent research points to a strong link between a mother's oral health and that of her developing fetus.
Gingivitis is common from the 2nd through to the 8th month of pregnancy when more frequent cleanings are often advised. A balanced diet during pregnancy also affects both your oral health and your baby's development. Development of baby teeth begins between the 3rd and 6th months of pregnancy when the nutritional supports of calcium, protein, phosphorus, and vitamins A, C, and D are vital.
If you experience morning sickness, it is important to neutralize the acid caused by vomiting because this acidity can erode tooth enamel and make them more vulnerable to tooth decay.
If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, Dr. Malone recommends you take care of any outstanding dental treatment needs as soon as possible. Dr. Malone will be happy to consult with you to ensure your oral health needs are met during this exciting and demanding time in your life.
The changes in hormonal levels for women during menopause tend to increase the risk of gum disease while at the same time accelerating bone loss. Proactive planning can put you on the road to a healthy future, and getting the care you need now is the best way to ensure better health and a more vital appearance as you age gracefully!
