How Do Invisalign® Aligners Work?

Invisalign Escondido

Compared to braces, Invisalign clear aligners are nearly invisible!

Perhaps you’re thinking about getting Invisalign to straighten your smile for the first time. Or maybe you’d like to correct the relapse you’ve experienced since wearing braces back in middle school or high school. You may wonder how Invisalign differs from traditional braces.

Invisalign’s design uses sets of clear acrylic aligners that gently move your teeth into the desired position. By gradually changing the digitally designed trays out every two weeks, your bite will predictably move into the pre-programmed alignment that we’ve planned.

Aligner Design and Fabrication

Using 3D imaging and technology, Invisalign labs take the images and impressions captured in our practice and digitally plot the ideal position of your teeth. As your bite is virtually adjusted, a set of aligners is created to methodically nudge the teeth to match the digital model.

What Are the Invisalign “Buttons” for?

Sometimes teeth will need to be directed into positions that aren’t possible with a retainer-like tray. To assist with the guiding, a small, translucent button is attached to the tooth, adding a surface area for the aligner to pull or push against. When the tooth is aligned, the button is removed. Buttons can also be used to attach small rubber bands that are temporarily needed.

Does Wearing Invisalign Hurt?

Because no wires or brackets are used with Invisalign, the majority of people say that this transparent aligner system is more comfortable than braces. As the movements are made biweekly versus through monthly adjustments, Invisalign wearers tend to experience less discomfort and pressure.

Benefits You Can Clearly See

As the name suggests, Invisalign uses practically invisible aligners that are made of translucent BPA-free material. This material is almost see-through when worn over your teeth so you can straighten your smile discreetly. To help maintain your aligners, it’s essential to clean them daily to prevent any residual buildup or discoloration.

What’s the Typical Length of Treatment?

Most of our Invisalign patients finish their treatment in about 12 months. Every case, however, is different. Book a free consultation today to find out how long your treatment will take.
