Periodontal Care

Diagram of periodontitis and health toothGum disease is a very serious and real problem for people who don’t keep up good oral hygiene. It can lead to loose teeth, gum recession and bone loss. Luckily, it’s really easy to maintain good oral health, and Robert J. Malone DDS can help you do so.

The best way to tackle periodontitis is preventative care, which is done both at home, and with us. Your biyearly appointments will help remove any plaque buildup that could lead to gum disease. Even in the first stages, it is completely curable. If gum disease is allowed to spread further, and become advanced, it is incurable. That is why we take your oral health very seriously.

Treatment

As previously mentioned, the best form of care for periodontitis is preventive, as once you have it, you cannot cure it. That is why our dentists will always advise you on proper brushing and flossing techniques if they notice significant plaque or tartar build up.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of periodontitis, such as bleeding gums, swelling, bleeding ulcers and persistent bad breath, you should book an appointment with one of our dentists. They can examine the oral cavity and find the cause of your issue. It could well be gingivitis, a form of gum disease that is milder than periodontitis. Gingivitis is curable, but if left untreated, will lead to periodontitis.

If our dentist does find signs of gingivitis, or significant plaque buildup, they will instigate a routine cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque and tartar contain harmful bacteria that must be removed from the enamel of your teeth. Our dentists will also advise you on dietary changes, that can help prevent damage to your teeth.

Sometimes, routine cleaning is not enough, if damage to the oral cavity caused by gum disease, is too significant. In this instance, our dentist will perform root planing. Root planing is a procedure that dentists use to smooth the surfaces of the gums. This discourages the build-up of bacteria. Our dentist may also give you an antibiotic mouth wash to help.

Procedures after this stage are usually performed when periodontitis has advanced to the stage of incurability. Surgeries are performed to limit the impact of gum disease and help slow its growth. Gum and bone grafts can be used to replenish the loss of soft and hard tissue in the oral cavity. Loose teeth may be replaced by synthetic teeth such as dental implants or dentures.

Home Treatment

Our team will advise you on the best care for your mouth, but brushing twice a day, for two minutes, will ensure plaque does not build up. If you are experiencing sensitivity, we can help advise you on a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Replacing your toothbrush, when it becomes dull, will also help ensure you are giving your teeth the best cleaning they can get.
