As we grow older, our teeth naturally dull, and do not retain the same whiteness they had when we were younger. Coffee drinkers can often find that the beverage stains their teeth, and smoker’s teeth can yellow from the habit.
Teeth whitening offers a solution to all these issues, by increasing the shade of white of a person’s teeth, and bringing their confidence back. Robert J. Malone DDS can whiten your teeth, and help perfect your smile.
What Happens During Teeth Whitening?
An initial consultation appointment allows us to assess your viability for teeth whitening, and what you’d like to get out of the procedure. People who have oral complications, such as gum disease, or have sensitive teeth, are unable to have the process due to their oral health. Patients who are pregnant or are under the age of 18 are also unable to have the treatment. However, teeth whitening can accommodate patients with crowns and veneers.
We will ask what shade of white you would like and calculate how many appointments that would take. Usually, 2 appointments are the appropriate amount. Then, we will take measurements of your oral cavity and send them to a dental lab. There, the dental lab will create custom-fit teeth whitening trays that fit comfortably in your mouth. Once these are ready, you can have your first whitening appointment.
The procedure is very simple. We will first protect anything in the mouth that isn’t being whitened, such as any dental appliances, i.e. crowns, and the gums. Then we will apply the bleach to your teeth, and then place a blue lamp over the teeth, or in some cases, a laser, to activate the bleach.
At the end of the appointment, our dentist will give you top-up kits, to be worn overnight as instructed. These help maintain the whitening of your teeth, and allow you to enjoy the benefits for a longer period of time. Whitening appointments usually take 2 hours.
Keeping Your Teeth Whiter for Longer
Maintaining completely white teeth is impossible, as there’s no real way to stop them from dulling over time. However, there are a few things you can do help the whitening last a little longer. Avoiding sugary drinks will help prevent the damaging effects it has on the tooth’s enamel. Beverages including coffee, tea and wine all stain the teeth, and are best limited to ensure a brighter smile.
The other effective way to maintain the teeth whitening effects is to maintain good oral health. This is achieved by flossing, and brushing your teeth, twice a day, for two minutes. In this way, you stop plaque and tartar from forming yellowy deposits on the gumline of your teeth.
Robert J. Malone DDS offers teeth whitening that will beat any of the home kits you may buy online or in pharmacy stores; we can achieve a whiteness that is simply unmatchable. The teeth whitening process is a completely safe, cosmetic procedure that allows you to achieve a brighter smile.
