Periodontal Maintenance in Escondido, CA

Close up of healthy gums and pearly white teeth being examinedWhen a patient has severe periodontitis, a non-curable form of gum disease, they should be coming to us in every three months to have periodontal maintenance. This treatment allows us to limit the spread of the gum disease in their oral cavity and try and reduce the potential damage that it could do.

Robert J. Malone DDS offers comprehensive periodontal maintenance to help contain periodontitis, in order to reduce pain and its effect on their daily life.

What is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is a form of cleaning that is more comprehensive than the routine cleanings, that you may be familiar with from your bi-yearly check-ups. This form of cleaning removes bacteria from below the gumline, in pockets that develop via periodontitis, and underneath the gums.

Patients with periodontitis will be experiencing a number of symptoms, including bone loss, loose teeth and gum recession. This means our dentists need to be extra careful when helping to maintain the patient’s oral health, as damage is often significant. The use of periodontal maintenance is used between surgeries for periodontitis, to restore lost bone mass via grafts, or replace wobbly/decayed teeth through implants.

The use of lasers to destroy soft tissue can be used during periodontal maintenance, to remove gum affected by periodontitis and reduce its impact in the oral cavity. The roots are smoothed to discourage the growth of bacteria, and all plaque and tartar are removed thoroughly.

Maintaining Your Oral Health

The leading cause of gum disease is a negligence of oral health. Plaque and tartar buildup lead to gingivitis, a milder form of gum disease. This disease has symptoms that range from sensitivity, to mild pain and bleeding. We can help remove plaque and tartar, but it is up to you to maintain your oral health.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis. Periodontitis, in its later stages, is incurable. This leads to persistent bad breath, tooth loss, constant pain and swelling. Gum disease can be difficult to live with, and we try to reduce its impact as much as we can via periodontal maintenance.

To help maintain good oral hygiene, you should brush your teeth twice a day, for two minutes, to remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth. Keeping to your regular dental appointments with us will help reduce plaque and tartar build up. If you are unsure on how to brush or floss properly, talk to one of our dentists, who can advise you on the best techniques.

It has been seen that some patients, after periodontal maintenance and the necessary surgery, do not exhibit symptoms of periodontitis frequently, and can maintain the disease via their biannual routine cleanings. This is not the case for everyone, and the patients can still return to a condition in which periodontal maintenance needs to continue again, even if the disease had previously been minimized significantly.

Robert J. Malone DDS takes periodontitis seriously, and can help tackle your gum disease. Many patients experience a significant reduction in pain, and the disease’s effect on their daily lives is reduced, and we want to help you too.
